What’s New in RLM 18.1

  • Usernames can now be up to 128 characters long, so an email address can be used as a username. Both the client and the ISV server must be v18.1 or later. Otherwise usernames are cut to 32 characters, as before. A hostid=user= lock is still limited to 64 characters.

  • Token-based licenses now use the share= and client_cache= attributes of the token license. See Token-Based Licenses.

  • After a reread, the rlm debug log lists each license file entry that was rejected. These lines start with LFREJECT. Passwords in the rejected text are masked.

  • rlm now detects when it wrongly has an ISV server recorded as running, and clears that record so the ISV server can be started. It writes a debug log line that starts with ISVREPAIR.

  • Faster server startup and reread when the license path contains many license files.

  • The RLM web interface’s embedded web server has been updated to Mongoose 7.21.

  • The rlm and ISV server debug logs, including any set with DEBUGLOG or switched with rlmswitch, are written line by line. Entries appear in the file as soon as they happen.

Warning

Starting in v18.1, RLM will not start an ISV server binary unless a matching <isv>.hash file is found. In v18.0 and earlier, RLM started the ISV binary when no hash file was present and wrote a warning to the debug log. ISV server settings files are not checked. See ISV Binary Hash.

Changes in behavior

  • A license with client_cache but without share= is no longer held by the license server after checkin. Licenses with both client_cache and share= are still held.

  • The RLM web interface reads its HTTPS certificate and private key once, when RLM starts. Each file must be smaller than 16 KB, or the web interface does not start. Restart RLM after you replace either file.

  • A request over the network can no longer write a file on the license server, such as an options file. The server refuses it with “Request not supported over the network”.

  • Switching the debug or report log over the network (rlmutil rlmswitch, rlmswitchr, or the RLM web interface) now only accepts a file name that ends in .log, in a folder that already exists and is not a protected system folder. Otherwise the server refuses the switch and keeps its current log. Log paths set with -dlog or in the options file are not restricted.

API changes

  • rlm_close() now always closes the connection to the license server, even when keep_conn is set. With keep_conn set, the connection also stays open after the last license on it is checked in.

  • On Windows, the client DLL now exports rlm_server_next(), rlm_server_hostname(), rlm_server_port() and rlm_server_isv_next().

  • RLM_MAX_USERNAME has increased from 32 to 128. Rebuild any code that sizes buffers from it.

  • The v18.1 library names are rlm1811.dll, rlmez1811.dll, rlm1811.jar and rlmez1811.jar. Update any build script or DllImport that names the previous version.
