Failover

RLM Cloud lets you pair each license server machine with a failover machine, so that license service continues if a primary host goes down. This section explains the failover concept in the portal, how administrators configure it, and how all users monitor it.

Failover Concept

Each primary server machine can be paired with a failover machine. If the primary host becomes unreachable, the failover machine takes over license service for the servers running on the primary.

Failover is configured per server machine, not per individual customer server. For the broader concept of failover servers in RLM Cloud, including restrictions on metered and named-user licenses, see Failover Servers.

Configuring Failover

Failover configuration is performed by administrators only (requires Admin). Open the Admin section, select General, then the ISV tab, and click Configure Failover.

Note

Configuring failover requires at least 2 server hosts. If you have only one host, no failover can be configured.

The Configure Failover table lists one row per primary server machine, with these columns:

  • Primary Server – the primary server host.

  • Current Failover – the machine currently acting as failover for that primary, or none.

  • Edit Failover – a dropdown to choose a target failover machine, plus a save control.

To change a pairing, pick a target machine from the Edit Failover dropdown (or select none to remove failover for that primary) and save. A status banner reports progress.

The operation is long-running. When you change or remove a failover pairing, the portal:

  • Deletes the failover license files on the old failover host.

  • Shuts down the old failover servers.

  • Creates new failover directories on the new host.

  • Retains the old logs on the old host.

All failover configuration changes are recorded in the Audit Log.

Managing and Monitoring Failover

Once a server has a failover machine, you can monitor and operate the failover server from the Cloud Servers page (requires View or higher). A Failover tab and column appear, showing the failover host and an Up / Down status. See Cloud Servers for the Cloud Servers page itself.

From the failover view you can:

  • View the failover server’s options file.

  • Reread the failover server (requires Manage).

Note the following:

  • Failover servers cannot be enabled, disabled, or deleted directly. Manage these through the failover configuration described above.

  • Controls are disabled when the failover host is Down.

  • A primary server that has no failover pairing shows Not configured.
